EXCELLENCE IN THINKING EXCELLENCE IN ACTION

Creative thinking is the mother of all tools of self- development. It develops an ability

to solve problems
to be a positive thinker
to be a good communicator
to manage stress well, by taking problems as challenges
to develop better relationships

And the best part is creative thinking can be learnt as a skill, just like the numerous other skills like typing, cycling and driving.
Both WHO and UNICEF have advocated ten life skills as an essential requisite of quality education for every school worldwide. The module of ten life skills includes the following.:-

  • stress management
  • problem solving
  • communication skills
  • emotion management
  • creative thinking
  • self awareness
  • interpersonal skills
  • empathy
  • decision making
  • critical thinking

Dr Manmohan Singh in his address at the 95th session of Indian Science Congress- on 3rd Jan,2008 at  Vishakhapatnam has said,  “……I urge our academic community to come forward with innovative ideas to help us overcome and meet this challenge effectively. Tried and tested methods will not suffice. We need fresh creative thinking- Out-of-the-box solutions. The academic community too must be willing to think creatively.”-

The importance of creative thinking and communication skills is reflected in the NCTE document as prepared by NCERT. Excerpts were reported in The Hindu of 30 Oct 2001.

Upgrading teacher training

The curriculum structure, course content and the scheme of examination in the two-year B.Ed. programme have been developed after an in-depth study of the NCTE document on curriculum framework on quality education at the regional and national levels by the NCERT. This is an alternative to the existing one-year B.Ed. programme.

THE NATIONAL Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been assigned various types of specific and comprehensive tasks covering almost all aspects of teacher education and school education. …………
Recently NCTE has brought out an excellent document titled NCTE Curriculum Framework 1998, which highlights major issues being faced by the education system.
The specific objectives of the two-year (four semesters) B.Ed. (secondary) course are to: enable the prospective teachers to understand the nature, purpose and philosophy of secondary education; and develop among teachers an understanding of the psychology of their pupils, to help them to understand the process of socialisation; to equip them to acquire competencies relevant to stage specific pedagogy, curriculum development, its transaction and evaluation; to enable them to make pedagogical analysis of the subjects they teach at the secondary stage, develop skills for guidance and counselling and foster creative thinking among pupils for reconstruction of knowledge. It also aims at acquainting them with factors and forces affecting educational system and classroom situation and to utilise community resources as educational inputs. In addition it aims to develop communication skills and use of modern information technology for school purposes, develop aesthetic sensibilities, and acquaint them with research in education, including action research.
